Ultra Cut does the job November 3, 2008 Roy Hladysh (Santa Susana, CA USA) I am not a plumber. I make custom cooling manifolds out of 1/2 and 3/4 copper tubing. I have had projects that require hundreds of precision cuts. So far, this tool saves time and was economical in price. The product looks like it is well made and may last quite a while, but it is too soon to say for sure.
The instructions for changing the tool from 1/2 to 3/4 were not clear enough for me. I finally figured our I had to push the rollers down into the 3/4 position.
Terrific innovation in pipe cutting! April 25, 2008 Samurai Dave (Ventura, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Despite the previous negative reviewer post, I decided to chance making a purchase anyway. I'm VERY glad that I did. It works just like the video demos. Once you read the operating instructions (1 minute), and learn to use it, it works GREAT! Clean cuts in seconds. AMAZING! I've cut my share of copper pipe by hand, and I wish I had this tool 20 years ago when I was repiping an apartment complex.
If you don't read the instruction manual, and just stick a piece of pipe it it and press the button, there will be a racket because the pipe is not engaging the cutter wheel properly. That is not the tool's fault. That is called OPERATOR ERROR. Adjust the lever for 1/2 or 3/4 pipe, secure the pipe in the spring loaded rollers, press the button, and in seconds one pipe is now two.
The metal is light weight, which makes the tool easy to hold overhead without fatigue. When removing the screws (to change cutter wheels) you can't crank it down on them like it is made of stainless steel or something. Get it snug (normal torque, not gorilla style) and it will be fine. I replace the cutter wheel with absolutely not problems. However, you will need to remember the proper direction things go during reassembly. (I reversed the rollers, which was quickly resolved.) So keep the manual handy, or take good mental pictures.
It can easily cut pipe in wall cavities, which has always been a tough job. The fact that it is made in the USA, makes me feel that much better about the purchase.
My friends can't believe how fast the UltraCut works when I give them a demo. "NO WAY!" If you are cutting pipe, GET THIS TOOL!
